The Prekindergarten Expansion Grant is a competitive funding opportunity administered by the Division of Early Childhood at the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This grant aims to broaden the availability of high-quality prekindergarten educational programming and school readiness services for three- and four-year-old children across Maryland.
Our program is aligned with the goals of The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and focuses on expanding access to prekindergarten for families with limited incomes, specifically:
- Families with household incomes up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
- For Fiscal Year 2025, the program includes Tier II families, which cover:
- Children with disabilities
- Children who speak a home language other than English
- Families with household incomes between 300% and 600% of FPL
Continuing from the Preschool learning stage, Pre-K learning focuses on problem-solving, responsive listening and language usage, as well as social and collaborative skills, with specific lessons in:
- Reading (matching letters to sounds, recognizing familiar words)
- Writing (using letters and other symbols to create written messages)
- Math (simple addition and subtraction, sorting and classifying objects)
- Social skills (respecting others and working together)
- Physical skills with complex or combined movements (jumping rope, climbing)
